New technologies such as the steel frame changed the way buildings were constructed, new styles such as the Richardsonian Romanesque changed the way buildings looked, and the development of the Canadian economy meant that new types of buildings were required. Many of the public buildings, banks, houses, hotels, department stores, and factories constructed during these years determined the character of Canadian cities for the next half century.
